Windup...Unwind

Erika Larkin, PGA

Think for a moment about the sequence of your golf swing…your body turns back and then turns through, right? You probably have heard the words "coil" and "load" and "rotate." It seems that most golfers can get wound-up, but getting things started down from there is a crapshoot. Sometimes it works great and the wing feels easy. However, many times arms, hands, legs and hips get out of sequence from culprits like tension in the arms and hands, loss of balance and improper weight shift. So, we want to create a "windup" in a certain order, and then an "unwind" in the reverse order.

Unwind

WINDUP (try and keep #'s 4&5 quiet until it's their turn to move)

  1. Club head
  2. Hands & Arms
  3. Shoulders
  4. Hips
  5. Legs/ Feet

UNWIND (#'s 3,2 &1 need to be patient while 4 & 5 get the downswing started)

5. Feet/ Legs

4. Hips (they slide first, and then turn)

3. Shoulders

2. Arms & Hands

1. Club head

With this proper sequence (and minimal tension) you can start to develop a more fluid, free and efficient golf swing.

Good luck!
